Actually, Hyperion (now owned by Oracle) BRIO Business Intelligence tool can easily pivot 10,000 row in a browser. It's very possible.

Good points, I do believe Google's "Native Client" project is design to address high performance situations. MS Office will definitely go web based. iTunes, not so sure about that...Eric might have to use his last days as an Apple board member to beg Steve for an iTunes port lol.

I agree - Google won't get it right in 2010 or even 2011. In fact I have my doubts as to whether they'll ever get it right. But what I think they WILL do is force Microsoft to play defense and reduce the bloat that is Windows. Let's face it - Microsoft relies on the ever increasing processing power of modern computing to make its bloatware workable. If they could get the OS slimmed down, imagine how much more powerful it will be.

Right now, the main apps I need that are non-web based are iTunes, Quicken, and Office. As web app functionality improves, I'm hoping that Office will be supplanted by a GApp, though I have my doubts as to whether or not large data files will be workable in a web format. Can you imagine trying to create a pivot table on a 10,000 row dataset using a web platform?

In the end, between Google, Microsoft, and Apple, the OS space is only going to get better as these three giants duke it out.

Consider how long it's taken Microsoft to come up with a credible search product. It takes will, stamina and resources.

I don't think anyone believes that Google will blow Microsoft out of the water in 2010, however they appear to have the will, stamina and resources to keep at this for a decade....and with that kind of tenacity anything is possible

[...] (Thanks to Parallel Divergence for the image!) Google’s been on quite the update frenzy of late. First they remove the beta label from a slew of their cloud apps, then they go and announce that they’re going where few have dared to tread and attempt to release a complete OS. All within the course of two days! Let me preface all my commentary by saying that I am a Googler. They own my a**. I live in Gmail. My life is managed completely through GCal. I have two sites I manage that are Read the original post: EDITORIAL – Google’s expanding (evil?) empire [...]
